Ron,
The red button has two funcitions
1. To trip the Solenoid on the shutter
2. To turn on the light bulb inside the rangefinder to allow focusing in the dark.
two beams of light are projected, you adjust the focus until the two beams converge.
If no light comes out, you may have to replace the batteries, or bulb, or clean up the corrosion created by leaking batteries. ( funny thing while finding an answer to your last question, size of lens. I found the batteies in my rangefider were badly carroded. Had to clean the contacts with a drummel tool with a wire brush)
The batteries are in a compartment, the door is ing the middle of the back of the rangefinder. Push in and slide slightly sideways to the right the door should pop open.

Hope this helps.
Carl
