Although I no longer have that lens, I think I remember how it worked. Obviously you know how to cock and release it. As I recall, the lever with the open and darkened circles is used to open the shutter blades when it is cocked, for focusing. Try it and see what happens. The M setting is sync for flashbulbs and X is instant for electronic flash, as you probably know.

I've seen opinions both pro and con on that lens. From my experience, I LOVED it! Mine was sharp as a tack, and I kept it [even though I got other lenses, e.g. an 80mm Planar and a 65mm Angulon]. One thing about that shutter - very reliable. During the time I owned that camera [35yrs], I had to have my compur shutters cleaned several times, but this Prontor shutter never faltered, even the self timer! So, from my perspective, I highly recommend it.
