Changing the lens focal length changes the amount of magnification you get. With any lens you can get it to focus at any height if the bellows is long enough, but you may not get enough of an enlargement for what you want.

I have an Omega D2 which set up for only 4x5. For example, using the D2 with 6x6 film, a 150mm doesn't enlarge the image as much as the proper 75mm does, either one will focus a image about one inch in size on the base.

The easiest way to find out if a lens will work for what your enlarging is to try it out. You don't need absolute darkness to see the image, just when printing.
