On a crown, there is a tube that runs from the rangefinder down
to the plunger inside are alternating series of balls and
cylinders. If someone has pulled the plunger off before they
may
have lost the balls and cylinders. Also depending on when your
camera was made it had either 70 or 71 of these pieces in
there.
As to the cams, they will be located under that spring door that covers the linkage of the rangefinder so the front standard doesn't hurt anything. Most of the linkage is black, the cams are chrome. The cam rides in the tube through a slit and the balls and plunger move the cam. There is a bent arm that rides on the curved edge of the cam. As the cam is moved by focussing, the bent arm moves the mirror in direct correlation with the curved part of the cam (wide angle cams are very curved, long lenses are nearly straight)
It's also possible that the cam is missing, which would have the
same effect. If you go to ebay and search for a seller named
Nikondave, he will sell you a copy of the repair/alignment book for
the rangefinder. Midwest Camera exchange (www.mpex) might have one
too.
