Jim and others,
I appreciate the advice, but you were all way off
base. How could I have expected mere camera buffs to
explain such a delicate operation as this to a
professionally-trained electronic technician. For the
benefit of others, I offer a brief synopsis below.
The proper way to accomplish this simple task was to
ruin a $20 pair of Xcelite needle nose pliers by
sharpening the ends to fit the notches on the
retaining ring. After you unscrew the rear lens
element, you then place said sharpened ends into two
of the four notches of the retaining ring. While
trying to use brute force on a make-shift tool, you
allow the tool to slip and penetrate the delicate
shutter leaves, tearing and twisting them so they are
no longer recognizable.
After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, mixed with
great conjugation of verbs that is not repeatable in
this forum, you hurriedly box up the mutilated mass
before your wife can see it for she would forever
remind you of your great dexterity.
You then surreptitiously slip to the Post Office and
mail the package to S. K. Grimes, master retaining
ring remover and shutter leaf repairman, WHICH IS WHAT
YOU SHOULDA DONE TO START WITH, YOU IDIOT!!
