The resistor in the circuit will not effect the synchronization, only the tripping voltage/current.
A lot has changed with flash units over the last 45 + years and it's worth the time to try the lens/flash combination before making the modification.
If it fires consistantly, then there's no problem.
I shoot my 80mm WF with a 60CT-2 metz without a problem.

As to modifiying the supermatic X for heavy current strobes, it's an easy modification.

The supermatic X is a supermatic without the geartrain.
Comparatively the Supermatic looks like a swiss watch--not a cubic mm to spare, the Supermatic X looks like an empty warehouse. The contacts are nothing more than brass strips and are easily polished and adjusted.
