Dennis. I vote with the idea its the back. Do I
understand correctly you are making the focus
decisions solely by the ground glas_s? I suppose
it is possible your camera once had a fresnel lens
and that was removed. If the GG was not put back
correctly, that might account for the difference
between the GG image and that formed on the roll
back. Try the "exposure along a fence" approach,
focusing in the middle. That way, you might find
the plane of focus is in front or, or behind that
on the GG. Are you using [or do you even have] a
rangefinder. Is there a focus scale on the bed
for that lens? Either it focuses somewhere, or
you simply have a bad lens. I would bet on mis-
alighment somewhere.
