Josh, I would predict that a yellow or red filter would make the tonal range even shorter because yellow increases the contrast. Try one of the developers designed to give a normal tonal range such as PMK or POTA. They can be ordered online at photoformulary.com. These are easier to use than Technidol. I use PMK for all B&W film. You cant burn out highlights even if you try.
