I am a new member - perhaps someone can help me. I just bought a Century Graphic with a Rodenstock Ysarex 105mm. f4.5 lens in a Compur shutter. I was wondering if this is a decent lens ? Does anyone have any experience with one or have any information about it ? Thank you all very much in advance for responding.

The Ysarex is a tessar-type lens that was made in a variety of focal lengths. It ought to be ok. But and however, how well YOUR lens now performs depends not only on its design but on how well it was made and on how well its been treated since it left the Rodenstock factory.

So to find out how it does, shoot some pictures with it. Camera on tripod, focus on GG, cable release, same subject that's not dark at the edges of the image, shoot at f/4.5, /5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, and f/22. I don't suggest f/32 because all lenses are soft at f/32. Subject should have much detail, be at "moderate" distance. I use ~ 30'. DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE RF IS SET UP FOR THE LENS. ISO 100 film, e.g., TMX. FOCUS ON THE GG, use a loupe. And then you'll know.

Cheers,

Dan

Dan,

Thanks very much for the response. I will try what you suggested. I gave the wrong information, however. My Rodenstock Ysarex is actually a 95mm f3.5. Do you or anyone else have any experience with this lens ?

Bob, all I know is that it was one of the normal lenses sold for the Graflex XL. Still a tessar type, still has to be tried.

You'll probably get a more informative answer if you post y'r question in the Graflex XL forum. Also look there for a recent post by antjam65, who's recently put up a site dedicated to the XL.

Cheers,

Dan
