My new Graflex arrived with a Zeiss-Planar 4 1/4 X 6 1/2 Series 1A f4. S/N 311055. Iris scale is marked 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. I assume this is the US stops?
What is current focal length measurement of this lens?
It is not listed in Paine's review as coming with the camera from the factory.
Thanks,
Charles

Charles, it is a normal lens for 4 1/2 x 6 1/2, should be about 8". The stop numbers correspond to 4, 5.6, 8, 11, ...

Cheers,

Dan

Yes those are US stops, the conversion is to remember US 16 and f16 are the same.

I don't have zeiss catalog and B&L didn't do much with the Planar.

If there was ever a lens design that benefited from coating and later multi coating, it's the Planar. Keep the lens well shaded and clean, and expect about a 1/2 to 2/3 stop loss from the internal reflections and don't expect a contrasty image.

Is there any information anywhere on how to repair/reinstall the iris blades on one of these old barrel lens?
