I need a repair to my Graflex 1000 lens and tried to call Fred Lustig. His answering machine says his shop is closed indefinitely. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there anywhere else that might repair these lenses?
Thanks,
j

Hi....

There is a thread or two about Fred's health in the "Large Format Photography" section of this help board.

He has been recovering from a July stroke, according to a few folks who have spoken with either Fred or his wife (and who have passed the info along here and on photo.net)I remember reading that he is not taking on any jobs for atleast 3 months, I believe.

That said, I don't think you are likely to find anyone else who would attempt to fix this shutter. What is the problem with yours? This past spring the shutter blades jammed on my 1000 shutter after I fired it a few times at 1/1000th (not a recommended move if the shutter hasn't been overhauled in 40 years).

I first checked with SK Grimes and they said not a chance could they fix it. Then i saw JP Mose's post in another section of this Help Board that said Fred could now fix them after many years of saying no. So I sent it to him & he repaired it; according to Fred, it took him 3 long, full days.

Unfortuately depending on the complexity of the repair you need, you may not find anyone who will take on the job. Perhaps someone else on this forum knows another parts or repair source but AFAIK Fred is the only person who has the parts, expertise & patience to do the work. You might try to get him again in the coming weeks.

My shutter speeds have become inconsistent - usually too slow - in the ranges I normally use - 1/125, 1/60, 1/30 (I don't know about the other speeds). Also, when cocking the shutter I can feel a little "catch" that wasn't there before. I've tried firing the shutter through all of its speeds a few times, but that didn't seem to do any good.

I agree that Fred is probably my only hope.
thanks,
juan

I spoke with Fred about a month ago and he indicated that he would start repairs (hopefully) in the mid Fall. I would suggest calling him again and hopefully someone will pick up. That message may have been recorded early on before the status of Fred's health could be determined.

From my research, Fred is the ONLY one who will repair the 1000 shutter.

Good luck!

I spoke with Fred last Friday. He offered to do more work for me. Long story.

Suggest you contact him.

Cheers,

Dan

I cleaned and lubed my 1/1000 with the help of the factory service manual. Mine did not need any parts. I do not have any spare parts. I am capiable of doing same for others. Contact me at c9photo2@att.net if intrested. Use Graflex 1000 shutter repair for the subject line.
