Will an 80 mm lens work with a 4 x 5 or is the circle too small?

Bill, that is too broad a question. You'll have to be more specific about which 80mm lens you have [or are inquiring about]. For instance, there's a 47mm Super Angulon XL lens which will [barely] cover 4x5. |

For the most part no. there are wide angle lenses with apertures in the f8 range that will (75mm Super angulon) But most of the Tessars, Raptars, Ektars, (even the Wide Field Ektar) Xenotars, Planars won't.
a real crude rule of thumb. If the filter diameter is less than 1.5" dia it probably won't. Another crude way is to stand the lens on its end and look at its profile. If it looks like a pancake or a square, it won't cover. If it looks like an hour glass and weighs more than a pound you've got a chance.
