The original leatherette kit I bought is for a Pace (body only) with cutouts for the governor side hardware....there was no door cover in the kit, but they did include a GG!

Anyone ever run across a Pre-Ann door.....it had a flat wooden door....one strange thing about the wooden door....some had an small aluminum cover plate....screwed in place....would seem that the intent was perhaps to be ordered from the factory with an opening for lenses with the door closed...(maybe even a screw-on bulge??)

As stated before this material is a man made product....tite mesh backing with a very thin covering that looked and felt like real Morroccan leather! Measures .032" thick with my micrometer!

That's what I was thinking...
As far as the aluminum plate is concerned, I know what you're talking about.
I think though that the plate was intended as a 'stiffener" to prevent cracking/warping of the wood.
Still, your theory has merit, given the amazing number of various "custom" modifications one can see in Graflex cameras.
Jay Tepper had a 3A and a Series B with Signal Corps markings and they were covered in british tan colored morocco, not black!
