Took the front rail assembly of my anniversary Speed Graphic apart today to give it some needed cleaaing & lubricating.

Put the whole deal back together, and the track on the bed is just slightly higher then the track within the body, so when I bring it back in the yolk goves above the track, instead of in it. So I dissamelbe the tracks, remove teh shims,a nd put it back together. Now everything flows just the way it used to. I can't find anything that feels lose, or different then how I remember it.

So, I have two quetsions, what the heck could I have done that wouldn't have thrown the alignment off by that much? Should I even worry since everything seems to have come back together properly without the shims? I beleive thier only purpose is to align the track to line up with the trackinside the body. They don't appear to be doing anything else. So if the track works without them, I'm not going to lose anything by having them serve their purpose in my ziplock bag of assorted spare parts would I?

I just looked in the Anny repair manual. It only mentions shims if the bed is lower than the case rails.

"If the side brace plate has been removed, check the bottom of the bed and case with a straight edge. Check guide surface of the yoke by laying a straight edge on top surface of each side. Adjust by slight repositioning of the side brace plate. Slide standard from case to bed and note any unevenness at the hinge... If the bed is low, shim beneath bed block with thin fiberboard; or, if the bed is high, draw down by tightening bed block and guide screws. Check focusing scale and rangefinder... Adjust rangefinder infinity with the case yoke eccentric screw."

No other mention of shims being there. So if it fits without them, that's the way it's supposed to be...
