Hi DIRT....You describe metal knobs on each side so I assume you have a Graphic of some description. Go to the side of the camera where the leather handle or hand grip should be. Run your fingers along the front edge. Near the top edge you may feel a slight bump underneath the leather covering, this bump not much bigger than a nail head. The bump might also be located in the center on the top of the camera. When you press the bump, the bed of the camera should spring open slightly, then you grasp the bed and pull it down and lock it in place. This should reveal a model name plate on the front standard above the lens/lensboard, and there should be a serial number tag on the bed under the focus rail. Once you get this far, post back with additional questions as they come up.
One word of warning...when closing the front of the camera, make sure that the front standard is pushed all the way back inside the body (box) of the camera and turn the focusing knobs so that the focusing rails are racked as far back toward the body as they can go. This will avoid bending the focusing rails or breaking the links on it, both problems being expensive to repair.
Hope this helps

Depending on which model you have, there is a little "bump" under the leatherette either top front center or upper right-hand side of the camera. Push on the bump and the camera should pop open. Fred.

The front should pop open when you press in on the concealed bump. However, sometimes it doesn't, and you have to pull a bit while pressing. Either of the focusing knobs make this easy to do.

And if it is green top with a scale and the rest of the body black then its a super which you turn the silver knobs toward the top of the camera to open the bed and the opposite to close.

It's not a bad idea to go to Craig's Camera site and buy the manual for the camera - clears up some of these little mysteries.
