Sorry guys ...

I have read numerous short descriptions about using the Peepsight with the sportsfinder and parallax correction by telescoping it up and down ... I have a Crown Graphic ... but I still have no idea how you are supposed to use this thing. The manual does nothing to explain it either.

What am I missing?

Simon, I don't know about the Crown (you have a 2x3, right?) but it's been determined here that the Century sports finder does not have parallax correction. Apparently the various 4x5s do, however.

Hey Henry,

I have a 4x5 Crown Pacemaker with the Top RF. What I am trying to understand is how to use the telescoping peepsight with the Sportsfinder. The Peesight has several distance marks infinity, 5, 8 and 6 in that order from top to bottom. The Peepsight telescopes up and down as you look through the Sportsfinder. I want to understand how this was supposed to be used?

Thanks.

The top viewfinder (what you call peepsight, I think) has no connection with the sportsfinder. Rotating it to one of the closer (any but infinity) positions adjusts what it sees for parallax.

If you play with the sportsfinder's wire frame, you'll see that it can be raised to several marked distances from its rest position in the front standard. That's how you compensate, crudely, for parallax. To use the sportsfinder, swivel the folding sight -- it is there, isn't it? -- up and look through it.

I am talking about the Folding Sight ... thats what I am calling the Peepsight as I believed thats what it was called in the manual. Thats the item I am trying to understand the use of. It just goes up and down and is marked with those figures I mentioned from top to bottom. My Sportsfinder has no markings on the side at all. So this leaves me in a bit of a quandry.

SimonW,
If you look real close to the numbers on the "Peepsight" NOTE: the numbers >>ARE<< and stand for...>>inf >>15 ft (NOT FIVE there is a 1 there) >>8 ft >>6 ft...
The "wire frame" must be extended all the way, in other words short section first, then the top section all the way up....the top section is the frame you will be using (the short frame is only an extension to get the top frame hi enough)!
The sports frame is for quick shots, set distance first (on the "peepsight")..then with your eye about 6 or 7 inches away from peepsight, center it on the top frame and shoot!.......Bert

What you see is what you get. To use it you just look through it as you would any other view finder, but it is kinda cool 'cause there is absolutely no interference of lenses. They tend to shoot a little tighter than a true 4x5 format with a 135mm lens and are about dead on with a 162. This leaves some room to crop with the 135mm lens. Anyway, you want your eye right up next to the rear site, not back away. If you lower the rear peep to infinity, note that this lowers the angle of the camera and when you raise it it slightly raises the angle to correct for paralax. I think it is a bit too much and unecesarry but there it is. Some models are different in that the correction is made on the front wire finder. Be sure you have the cage and flexible spring hoop pulled all the way up. then stick it on a tripod or something and compare the GG to the view throug both your WIre sports finder and little plastic optical view finder. Only you can decide whicih will be your prefered method. Sometimes I just shoot by using the RF as this is a good centering point, and if in a real hurry, it is fast.
Anyway, just some added info for clarification if need be...
Stephen
