Hello - From your post I infer that you are speaking of the second generation of RB Autos, which, while born before the Series D, did roam the earth for so long that its production actually overlapped the D's.
Indeed, the RB Auto has considerably more focal extension than the D. Figure 18 inches for the RB Auto and 12 for the D, if we are talking 4x5 format. The RB Auto's versatility dazzles also. It has a front rise feature along with a dropping bed! Others may have a different perspective, but I feel that the rail system on the RB Auto gives away nothing to, say, a Deardorff in terms of quality and robustness.
You cannot go wrong with either! Buy 'em both!
