Hi All.

I have a pre-anny speed that I added a graflok back to. Yesterday I noticed that the sliders on this particular back slide in the opposite direction than others I've seen. The back also came without an ektalite screen, just a plain groundglass, and it's obvious it's designed not to have the fresnel. On this back the sliders lock the back in right to left, but my GVII & a friends late model crown (from the 70's) both lock from left to right.

Was this change made around the same time as they made the ektalite standard on graflocs, or at some other time? Thanks!

I actually have seen a lot of graflok backs that did not have the ektalite screens, as far as the sliders, are you sure it is a graflok and not a graflex? or perhaps they are on backwards or the oposite of what they are suspose to be?

Dave

Um, the back is held to the camera by four screws. In normal use it stays there. The focusing panel holds the ground glass and attaches to the back by a pair of sprung levers that engage pins on the back. It comes off to allow graflok accessories, i.e., roll holder, grafmatic, to be attached to the camera.

I'm sorry to be such a pedant, but the focusing panel is where the ground glass and fresnel, when there is one, live. The back has a large hole in it, never has ground glass etc. The back doesn't care whether there's a fresnel in the focusing panel.

Now to ask the obvious stupid and insulting question. Please forgive me for the insult. Did you, perhaps, install the back upside down? If so, the focusing panel and film holder will want to slip on from the right, not the left side of the camera. Right and left as when you're standing around the camera, thinking about what to do next.

About the fresnel. There's just one focusing panel casting. If you remove the ground glass from yours, you'll see that it rests on four nubs. The nubs on castings intended to be used with a fresnel are milled down so that with the fresnel in front of the ground glass the glass' ground face will sit where the film will when a film holder is in place. Got that? If you have a focusing panel with high nubs and put a fresnel in front of the gg, you can't expect focusing on the gg to work very well.

Yes, there are workarounds. E.g., put the fresnel behind the gg.

Cheers,

Dan

I am sitting here with one of my grafloks, that I just removed from the back and then removed the GG and the Fresnel, this is however, no 4 little nubs that have been milled down as on one of my other focus panels, this focus panel has two mounting areas approx 1.5 inches long with two tapered holes in it to attach the ground glass clips that also hold the focus hood, I know that it is the original as I purchased it in the box with all packing material and owners manuals from a wife of a photographer who had passed away with out ever using it.

Do I perhaps have something unique here?

Dave

This whole thing is confusing me. Not that it's hard to do these days, but ---- Is your focus panel held on by the sliders or by two chrome plated spring loaded arms? Does the focus panel have a folding metal viewing hood or does it have the flip up hood with cloth side cutains? Just trying to get a handle on exactly what back you have. Incidentally, they will install upside down and backwards but I don't know why anyone would want to do that. Need more input -------

Well, I know the differences between the various graflex backs, and this IS a graflok back. I also thought that perhaps the sliders were put on wrong, so I reversed them, but that was wrong, as if you look at them, one side is slightly longer than the other (clearance for the focusing back) and when these slide the 'proper' way they're on wrong.

As I have a GVII I don't mind the SG not having a fresnel, as I don't really plan on using the GG in it all that much (if I'm taking shots that need that kind of control I'll use the GVII).

I just thought it interesting that this one has sliders that work opposite most of the others I've seen/used.

Ok, here's a few pictures of the back of my speed:

http://www.agrijag.com/Images/Graflok002.JPG
http://www.agrijag.com/Images/Graflok003.JPG

the first one is the back of the camera with focusing panel in place, the second on is with it off, and the slide locks open, and the last is with the locks closed.

Has anyone else seen a graflok back that has sliders that work like this one?

Thanks for posting the images. It looks perfectly normal to me.

Thanks, looks like all of the several that I own, seems to be a normal back.

Yes, that's my point. It looks like any other graflok back. So the question is: When you lock a back onto your camera with the graflok sliders, do they go from left to right, or right to left? My Speed goes from right to left, my friend's Crown goes from left to right, and my GVII goes from left to right.

I have cameras that are both ways, I just looked at 4 of my speeds, 3 go left to right and one goes right to left, on my GV1 it goes left to right and my GVII it goes right to left.

so I guess over the years, I have not paid to much attention to it as long as it locked the item I was using in place, it did not seem to be a big deal..
