I didn't buy the 50mm diameter because I had already bought the six (6) lens Educational kit off ebay for $27.50 total. Some were a snug fit but they all fit in a series 7 adapter/holder. They could also be taped on the prime lens.
The larger one I bought from Surplus Shed is taped on the front element of my 360mm prime lens with blue painter's tape from Home Depot. It is the 4" square single element priced at $7.50. Even though it didn't cover the whole front lens, I got full 8x10 coverage on the view because of the 20" required bellows draw.

Thanks. And a good point about using tape. It could just as easily be taped to an old series adapter ring or broken filter ring (does anyone keep them?).
Hmmm, how about a cardboard tube that slips over the front of the lens?
Have to stop this line of thought or it will cost me money

Rich
I haven't received the diopter lens from SS yet that requires at least a 40 inch bellows draw but I have ordered a 4x5 bellows extension for my view camera. I thought it was prudent to test it on my 4x5 view first and buy an extension bellows for my 8x10 view later.I ordered it from an outfit in Texas.
Harry
Rich, would you explain why you would use a cardboard tube?

UPDATE: June 3, 2004... There still seems to be enough hits on this thread to justify a progress report.
I have received the -2 diopter lens from Surplus Shed for a total cost of $20.00. It is large enough to tape it on my 360mm (120mm diameter) front element. Actual lens focal length is 350.5mm and combined focal length is 878.5mm (34.6"). Total image magnification should be 2.51x. The exposure factor adjustment should be 2.5 stops.
The combined focal length requires a minimum of 900mm bellows draw to be able to focus at infinity. I've received my bellows extension for my 4x5 view camera but I oversized the bellows by 1/4" in each dimension so I have had to make new standards for my homemade view. I should be able to test the combined lens by September of this year.
Harry
My extension bellows were made by an outfit in Texas that advertises on eBay. I paid $70.00 plus $5.00 shipping for a max. estension bellows of 15 inches.

Around 1982 I mounted a +10 Series 6 lens on a bellows and took pictures using a Spotmatic ESII. It worked and the images were VERY VERY soft!!! I used it wide open as I never got arround to making up som waterhouse stops. Sima made a SF lens based on this principal.
Somewhere along the line I lost the +10 and have never tried to get another. |

My prime lens is a quality lens with a max. aperture of f/6.8. I intend to shoot either at f/16 or f/22.... f/16 will give me an effective aperture approx. f/41 and the f/22 will give me an aperture around f/60. I believe I should get good results with these settings and using my very stable tripod.
Harry
A plus (+)10 diopter is really on the far end of these single lenses (I also have a +10.. I'm going to have to try it sometime).
I'm very excited with the possibility of expanding my 360mm lens to nearly 900mm lens for only only about a $100.00 and some woodshop work (fun)!

...or affix a +1 diopter Series VII supplementary lens to the end of a three-foot tube, find the best position for a diaphragm made of a piece of thin black paper with a 30mm. hole cut in it, and you'd have a 1000-mm. soft-focus system working at f:32. |

A three-foot tube is only 914.400mm long. To be more accurate.... the tube should be 1000mm (39.4 inches or one meter) long for it to focus at infinity.

To be sure it is. I had envisioned the tube attached to a lensboard and mounted on the front of a camera.
Actually, two tubes, one telescoping inside the other, would be preferable. |

The best, in focus, image would have the film plane at the other end of the one meter tube.

It sounds like you're desinging the next "holga"! Use a 6 inch diameter tube(s) and put a polaroid back on it and you could sell them!

For anyone interested, after six months of looking on eBay I found and purchased one each minus(-) 1 and 2 diopter lenses, made by Tiffen in series 9 (approx. 81mm diameter). Total cost $13.98. The two negative supplementary lenses are in perfect shape and it shows that larger diameter minus(-) diopter lenses are still available (used) on eBay.
Harry
UPDATE:
I have tested the 900mm combined lens on my 4x5 view camera and the results were beautiful! My next step is to order 30" extension bellows for my 8x10 view and use a combined lens that will be near 1400mm in focal length, nearly five feet. Harry
My 30 inch extension bellows have been ordered from CameraBellows in the UK.... now the wait. Harry
I received my red 30" extension bellows in a little less than two weeks. Now the fun begins! Harry
Sorry to say, I had to return the bellows, end of experiment!
