I have an early Graphex shutter that is still erratic after three soaking treatments. On the low speeds it seems to work right most of the time, and then produces a shorter speed regardless of what the set speed is. Evidently something is not right with the low speed gear train, or there may still be junk lodged in it although I would think then it would malfunction all the time.

Any ideas, other than another Ronsonal dose?

I've worked on several of these shutters. At the slower speeds that utilize the gear train, you are winding up the gear train when you cock the shutter. There is a small part that engages the gear train as you cock the shutter. I have found that the tip of this part wears off and doesn't engage every time. Fred.

I bought the Graphex Shutter manual reprint from http://www.photobooksonline.com and was able to fix the synchronizers on my Graphex shutters with the help of the diagrams in the book. The book also is a wonderful passive instructor, i.e., it showed me where I dare not go in attempting a fix. I was comfortable with a "stage 1 disassembly" but if your problem lies deeper this book will reveal the necessary steps in the process. Otherwise I would have the work done professionally (Lustig or Grimes, when/if available).
