I just picked up a Schneider 5cm f/2.9 in a compur shutter and for the life of me cannot find anywhere on the net what the image circle for this lens is, I know if came off a Balda Camera, which was medium format, but was figureing it would make a heck of a wide angle for landscapes in Glacier Park, I know it will work with my roll film back but this darn thing would be a fisheye on 4 x 5, and the price was right only $2.50 for a coated Schneider in a working shutter.

Any help

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Did you look here? http://www.schneideroptics.com/
(Info>vintage lens data)
What is the name on it?

You have the lens you have the camera. Put them together. I'm going to go out on a limb and bet it won't cover 4x5 but you can easily check for youself. Assuming your camera can handle such a short lens.

Yes I looked there, and nope they did not have the data on this particular lens, the writing on it is , Schneider Kreuznach Radionar f/2.9 5cm and the shutter is a compur with speeds of B T and 1 sec to 300 also around the outside of the front lens element there is an adjustable ring that has marking from 1 foot to infinity, it seems to be a focus ring, all very smooth operations.

As I said I know it came off of a medium format folder, but still am curious.

Thanks

Dave

The LF Optical Reference says that it covers 2 1/4 x 2 1/4, originally in a Compur-Rapid shutter. I doubt it would cover much more, but a nice focal length for that format.

My guess is that the lens came off a Balda 35mm. folding camera, like the "Baldinette" of my childhood. My impression is that the "Radionar" is a triplet, not unlike the Zeiss "Novar," and a capable performer with 35mm. film. I'd be surprised if the image circle is much more than two inches in diameter but, as noted earlier, the best thing to do is try it out and see what happens.

It is a normal lens for 35 mm. It will barely cover a 43 mm circle at infinity. We all dream of finding cheap wide angle lenses. There is no such thing, alas.

Cheers, regrets,

Dan
