I need some advice on using the focal plane shutter on the T setting. When the camera is mounted in the horizontal position, the FP shutter closes just fine, but in the vertical position it is slow to close from the T setting.Does this sound like a spring tension problem and how difficult is it to lube and or check the tension and adjust? Thanks all, in advance

What tension number are you using? It's not uncommon for it to be slower when using "T" vertically and instructions of the day state that you should use tension of 3 or higher for time settings.

Glenn, the only tension settings I know of are the 30/60 etc. high low lever. Is there a place to adjust them inside somewhere? Thanks for you quick reply to original post.

Click on Graflex manuals on the lower left and down load the Top RF Pacemaker Service manual. Both side RF and top RF pacemakers basic camera are identical.

The older Graflex shutter, found on the reflexes and the press cameras right through the "Anniversary" models, used combinations of slit widths and tension settings to give you a choice of 24 shutter speeds. The "Pacemaker" shutter doesn't, as you observed. The high position (1/60 rather than 1/30) is the higher tension. You can use "T" with either, and the high is better. If you're doing that and the thing still is slow when running horizontally, a bit of careful cleaning and lubrication probably is indicated. I'd certain try that before messing with the drive spring! |

I should pay more attention to what I am reading. Of course, the Crown only has two settings. To use the Time setting, put the tension lever on the high setting. If it's still too sluggish, you will need to lube the curtain roller bearings. Please don't try to adjust your spring tension until all else fails. Just the tiniest drop of light oil on the roller shafts does wonders.
