Hi, Graflex folks,

I just acquired a 3-inch f/1.9 Ilex Oscillo Paragon lens, with the marking "1 : 0.85 X" on the front rim.

Anyone know if this covers 4x5? I haven't got a lensboard for it, or retaining ring, yet, so it hasn't been tried out on my Pre-Anny yet. However the lens is in fair shape and the Ilex No. 3X Universal shutter seems nice and snappy, even to 1 second.

Thoughts?

Not usable at infinity on 4x5. I believe there's a law of nature to the effect that there are no inexpensive wide angle lenses for formats larger than 35 mm.

Sorry,

Dan

The one I tested wasn't good for 6x6 at infinity either... It was designed to photographer traces on an oscilloscope, so it's a decent macro lens (hence the near 1:1 engraving) It will cover 4x5 at a near 2x life size.

I used the shutter for a different pair of lenses, and made bases for the spare cells to use as loupes.

Thanks, Dan & Les:

I suppose I'll just use it as a macro lens, then. It only set me back $35. Not bad for a whim purchase.

But lots of other Graflex "whims" can get pricey really fast!

Its easy to go broke saving money. And there are better macro lenses.

Cheers,

Dan
