Forgive my bluntness, but that's a rather absurd statement considering the thousands of people who treat their very overworked shutters this way, for longer than any of have lived!. It is not only acceptable, workable, simple, safe and proven through decades of practice. How do you think precision watches have been cleaned for hundreds of years? Where do you think the shutter people got the idea?
To shrug it off as the rest of us are doing it all wrong and we're lucky if it works is laughable... And I'll stop here...

| I suspect precision watches contain only metal and industrial jewels, not ancient plastic materials, paper insulators and other odd stuff. I can't venture an informed opinion about the merits and demerits of dunking a shutter; if it works for you, it's the right way to proceed. I'm very much of two minds about doing it, and have had good results with less dramatic methods -- though the shutters I've cleaned have been sticky, not all gummed up. |

As a former watch repair person, I can tell you those who do it properly disassemble the watch, clean the parts, reassemble it micro-lubicating each pivot, adjust it, put it back in the case.
People who do not want to pay a couple hundred bucks for that service give it to some jerk that opens the case and drops it into an ultrasonic cleaner with a combination oil and detergent cleaner.
Your Rolex, your choice.
