It seemed to me that the magic of the Stroboflash’s soft light and gradual falloff was due to the design of the reflector and flashtube combination not in the electronics that powered it..
I wondered if another source to power the flashtube was possible so I attached the flashtube to a Vivitar 283 and voila! It worked. So after testing it I adapted the reflector and flashtube to the 283 and then had the same beautiful light quality in an adjustable automatic flash powered by 4 AA batteries.
The light output was about one stop less than the 283 unmodified and I had to change batteries a few times during the day (a small price to pay for this beautiful light source).
Minor issue, due to the size of the reflector it blocks where the 283’s sensor is located but this can be circumvented by using a Vivitar sensor extension cable to mount the sensor with unobstructed viewpoint.
The 283 Stroboflash can also be used manually with the manual adjustment attachment plugged in where the sensor usually resides.(pictured below)
