coating. (I often wondered if Wollensak's term was
Wolmanized)
Any time you have an air to glass surface you lose light due to
reflection, So a lens that has lots air to glass may transmit only
2/3 of the light it's supposed to. Also the coating reduces flare
from bright lights and reflections in the picture.
In effect the coating increases the efficency of the lens as well as contrast.
