Just so I don't miss anything obvious, you are trying to photograph something life size arent' you? The lens should be twice the focal length from the ground glass and twice the distance to the object. So a 5" lens (127mm) would be 10" from the ground glass and 10" from the object.
Trying to shoot a photo of your girlfriend outside and opening up two stops will get you and over exposed polaroid.
used the light meter and found the base exposure you can
increase the amount of light by EITHER opening up two stops and
keep the shutter the same, OR keep the aperture the same and slow
the shutter down two stop. Most people slow the shutter down since
opening the aperture decreases the depth of field and
sharpness.
