permit viewing the numbers printed on the back of the paper film
backing. In the simplest cameras, you had to wind to each
succeeding number, starting from 1 and going to 12 (in a
12-exposure camera like the Graflex 22) to make the 12 negatives on
the roll.
In more sophisticated cameras, the red window was only used to
position the film for picture no. 1. Thereafter, an internal
spacing mechanism in the camera took over and relieved you of
winding to the numbers. RKS
