A 500 Polaorid holder will work, but there's a trick. The modern film holders have a piece of heavy paper/cardboard that catches a latch on the 545, The 500 has no latch so you can pull the darkslide all the way out if your not careful. The only way to know what's going on is to blow a sheet of film, with the holder out of the camera see when the darkslide clears the film, then look on the back of the darkslide and make a mental note about something on the darkslide ligning up with part of the holder, ie 'when the thumb graphic passes the edge"
As to the wax on the holders. I say sure, use it sparingly and keep it out of the inside of the holders and it'll be fine. I would use a paste wax for wood, but if auto wax is handy use that. It wouldn't hurt to do the mating rails on the camera either.
