In order for the series system to work, you need:
1. Adapter- this can be either press on or screw on depending on the camera, most Speeds use a press on
2. Then comes the filter, all filters drop in except for the Pola screen
3. Now to keep the filter from falling out you need either a Retaining Ring, Lens Shade/hood or Pola Screen. A lens hood can be screwed to the Pola Screen if needed.
BTW; In the 50s the series ran from 4 (IV) to 8 (VIII) Special filters were available for large lenses like the 10" wide field Ektar. Later they designated these filters as Series 9 (IX)
I have yet to find a series 3.
