Les is right, although many people often use the terms interchangebly and incorrectly the "proper" answer according to "Photographers Mate 3 &2" Navy Training Course.. pg 83-86

"Depth of field is the range of distances on the near and far side of the plane focused upon within which all objects are in acceptably sharp focus" (note: field of view in front of the camera)

Depth of focus "the distance that the focal plane can be moved forward or backward from the plane of sharp focus and continue to produce and image of acceptable shapness.. this depth is always within the camera"
