If you have a Graflex SLR the situation is a little different. On my Super-D you set the shutter to be open, at a high tension, with the mirror down in the normal position. When you fire the shutter, the mirror flops up, fires the flash when it's clear, and then triggers the shutter to close. This is called the "drop shutter" speed, and it's about 1/5 second or so. It also makes a good slow speed on this camera, which normally has 1/30 as its slowest speed.
