Bill,
Just ran across your query today (2/13/01). Here's how I dealt with
the sticking shutter problem on my three Optar lenses (65, 101,
203mm). First, remove the front and rear lens elements; they
unscrew CCW. Next, mix lighter fluid (I use Ronsonol, widely
available at tobacco counters, drug stores, etc.) with dry powdered
graphite (lock cylinder lubricant, hardware store) and shake it
well. I use an empty Labelle container (from model RR shop) with a
syringe-like spout. Liberally douse the innards of your shutter,
front and rear, with this solution. Work the shutter through all
speeds two or three times. The fluid evaporates, leaving a thin
coating of graphite in the works. If there are no other mechanical
problems with the shutter (springs, gears, etc.) this should do the
trick and bring those slow speeds back to spec. Replace your optics
and you're in business!
