: As to testing without blowing a bulb. Radio shack has inexpensive digital Volt Ohm meters and even a flashlite bulb soldered to a couple of leads will allow you to test for continuity and a certain amount of voltage/current via the brightness of the bulb. I've purchased several Graphic outfits from estates and most of them had an old Volt meter or in some case an ammeter too in the gadget bag, so they knew what they were doing.
