Nick,
The thin metal thing you may be seeing in the viewfinder may be the
Automatic Parallax compensator. This thin piece of metal slides up
and down as you adjust the focus, correcting your view to see what
the lens sees. This is supposted to be there and is necessary for
proper functioning of the camera.
You could open the top, remove the two chrome screws on the top of
the rangefinder, just be careful not to bump the mirrors. You
should see the same view as the attached photo. While you have it
open check the battery contacts for corrosion and battery
junk...
