Nick-
Experience has taught me certain habits. Whether shooting a Speed
Graphic, Crown or Century,whether shooting 2x3 or 4x5 :
Always tripod. The steadiness of this platform is far superior to that of hands. Any camera shake can ruin an otherwise great shot.
Always loupe focus off the ground glass. This insures accuracy as I can actually see what the film will receive. Shooting sheets makes this step easier but I still do this even if I must remove the roll film holder and it seems a pain.
Tripoding and loupe focusing allows you to be in more control and with proper framing it eliminates most croping. In time of poor lighting I may even place a printed page, bottle or can next to the main subject for exact focusing. All I need to do the is use the proper settings.
Good Luck, Jim.
