Normally what I do to shorten screws is to thread a nut on the
screw, then you can file it down or use a grinder/sander. Then you
back off the nut to help clean up the threads. Take care to make
sure the end is not rough and the threads have no burrs. I have had
to make many screws like this for cameras and some of the other
hobbies I have.
The best tool I own is a Dremel Tool, with the cut off wheels,
grinders, and wire burshes makes projects like this quite
simple...
