Yes increasing the voltage does help, but also will change the flash synchronization (so will sluggish solenoids!) I have an HR that absolutely will not work on 3 cells but will work every time on 4 cells. But the weight and the change in balance with the extension is more than I care to handle.
The Graflex literature says that a 2cell solenoid should not be used with 3 cells, and yet I bought an out fit fromt he guy that bought it new and it came from the factory with a 2cell solenoid and a 3 cell flash. It worked then and continues to work.
