I don't know about modified, but the will work if you can keep your
head straight.
The 500 differs from the 545 in that the 500 doesn't have a stop for the darkslide.
You have to waste a sheet to find out exact when the film is completely free of the darkslide and the look at the letter/graphics on the back of the darkslide envelope and make a note saying "when the letter P is out of the holder, or when the thremometer is in line with the camera bail, etc."
Other than that they work fine.
