Like you, I had always been told that it's the rear cell which
is to be used to get the longer focal length, and I still think
that this is correct even though I also have seen the statements by
some EBAY sellers to the contrary.
The interesting thing is that your message says that the front
cell will work well enough alone, also. Have you compared negatives
from the front and rear cells to find out whether the quality
difference is noticeable? RKS
