First, the graflex globe strobe is a neat unit and well worth
keeping. I recommend (as I did!) keep an eye on the EBAY auctions
for a Graflex
250 RG unit with the standard head GN110 ( I got two this way, one
for backup).. The RG uses NiCad batteries, which can be replaced
with fresh sub-c type. Extra batteries sets can be made up using
readily available parts. These make great highly portable manual
flashes (I perfer to set my own f stops,do not trust the Auto
units)
Sorry it took so long to get back to you but, I tried some experiments with using other strobe power supplies to charge a 250 globe strobe. Voltages below 300vdc will not work, at 350vdc the strobe fires but only produces 60% of the light for a GN24. I DO NOT recommend adapting another power supply to use with the 250. Playing with the High Voltage is Dangerous, even though you fire the flash the capacitors can still hold enough charge to give you one heck of a shock.
Back in the 70's when I did wedding photography, we used the
Graflex 500 units with two heads, mine still works great with the
AC base. Just picked up the 500 RG base for it on Ebay. now I have
a great set of studio strobes that are also portable for location
shots. Unfortunatly, the heads for the 250 and 500 are not
interchangable. In the 500 the capacitors are in the base unit, and
allow full. 1/2, and 1/4 power settings. In the 250 the capacitors
are in the handle, and only work with full power.
Hope this helps!!!

Carl
