For cameras with synchronized shutters, the shutter acts as a switch and you need to find on the series port on the flash unit.

For lenses without synchronization a solenoid is attached to the shutter. In this case there are two circuts, one circut give current to the solenoid, the other gives current to the flash bulb. A common switch, usually on the flash unit is pressed sending current to both at the same time.

I bought an inexpensive digital volt ohm meter at Radio shack that I used to test my rig(get the one that shuts itself off). Much cheaper that blowing flash bulbs. If you watch carefully you may find test bulbs on ebay, some are bayonet based with a 4.5v filiment others are flashlight bulbs that have either bayonet or edison based adapters.
