Alec, it took me a while to guess that AFAIK probably means "as far as I know", but your info is very interesting. As you may know, there were at least TWO varieties of leaf spring used in these RHs, and they aren't fully compatible!
If Dennis has a "mixed" arrangement in which the outer shell, consisting of the curved back and the front plate, is a different vintage from the knob-wind insert, there is a real possibility that he might not be getting adequate pressure from the leaf spring to press the insert against the front plate.
As I remember it, the old-style leaf spring was just a straight strip of metal and the insert had to have a projecting screwhead positioned to engage each end of the leaf spring (i.e., one at the top and bottom).
It's worth checking anyway! RKS
