Hello,
Have a 4x5 " Ta-MarAdapt-a-roll" roll holder on the way! Didn't ask or check as to what size negative it produces, looks like 6x7 or 6x9 from the items photo. How does one load the roll holder without ruining a role of film? Also I've read that it may accept 120 film, but must wind onto a 620 film spool, is that true?
As always any help is appreciated! |

120 and 620 film are the same, only the spools are different. _________________ WilliamH |

2.25"x3.25" 6x9 is a poor metric approximation used by ignorant fools.
See: https://graflex.org/speed-graphic/adapt-a-roll.html I wrote this.
Absolutely.
Note. The 4x5 AAR's gate is displaced ~ 7 mm towards the insertion side of the camera's back. |

In old school jargon, "You are the man!". Thanks for the link. Didn't know that Calumet and others roll holders were still available, but did get the least expensive.....
Oh and thanks for the heads up on the correct designation of the film size. Hopefully your article will clear up if it counts the size correctly on the adapter or I need to do some skip number method. |

Hello again,
Received the AdaptaRoll 620 today. This does not operate apparently similar to the Calumet video... Either it is broken, modified or I just can not figure out how to use it. Camera side down, lift the back which swings to the right opening the feed area. On the right hand side top of the film chamber there is a large knob that has a shaft with a cross piece like the letter "T". It rotates with the large knob. That is to fit the film spool if I am not mistaken. My model has the spring pins on the other side to get the spools in. To the left, is a smaller know which only rotates counterclockwise due to it's connection to the internal geared clicker. It came with a plastic 120 film spool in this location. The knob has red indicator positions closer to the actual knurled handle, marked
"#1 through #7" then a line marked "S" and then "#8". Around the outside of the skirt it has in black, markings "#1 through #9" then an "S" marking and finally a "#10". On the bed of the unit, under the rightmost knob there is melted areas which appear to be where the rim of a film spool would go. This shaft has a partially moveable cross piece seemingly to engage a spool slot which is much larger than a 620 spool. It seems to fit the opening in the 120 spool that I received with the adapter. But while that spool fits in the space of the ratcheting, numbered knob film holder, it is too long to go into the space for the large knob. A 620 spool will fit lengthwise in that space, but the opening in the 620 spool is too small for the "T" shaft.
The hand written post-it note says to "Roll 120 Loading" a drawing of the knobs saying to turn the large knob counterclockwise 6 Turns 1 to 10". I may be misinterpreting the other sides diagram of 2 spools. The left one says "Full" and the right most says "empty". It does indicate to pul out pins.
- Someone appears to have tried to modify this roll holder for 120 film, melted in areas, swapped out parts. Getting a refund!

Finally found it!!! Thank you Dan! Since I did not know what was correct or missing and the actual operation of the Adapt-a-Roll 620, I did a comprehensive search. An interior picture was located showing a bar that runs somehow in the camera that trips the ratcheting number counter knob. It is missing from the unit I received. There also appears to be some glued modification on the cover plate over where the bar would seem to rest. I did manage to spoil a roll of 120 attempting to figure out the loading sequence. Gotten too used to videos showing stuff I guess, and missed verbal instructions!!
Without the counter working I had put a roll of film up to the beginning of the tape. Turning IIRC 2 full turns of the winding knob and marking the gate opening onto the film, I managed 7 possible frames before the 8th winding ran out of film before it was completed. Each "frame" was approx. 3 1/8" with
1 3/8" spacing. What was described euphemistically as "fiddley", I found exceptionally problematic {.
For posterity, Graflex documentation should be revisited in the Video format, IMHO!

Two nasty thoughts came to mind:
Send money!
If you want to see it, film it. |

I understand.. But on the reverse side a guy that started making videos of making flint arrow head, then different style mousetraps is making some bucks from the advertisement revenue. There are many videos and people monetizing them and able to quit there jobs and live off the revenue. Guy bought an over 100 year old rotten sailboat yacht hulk. 5 or so years later he is sailing it again in near original equipment on mostly someone else's dime. Videos getting donations and equipment from people who wanted to access his audience. I believe with the current videos on Graflex cameras, your expertise would draw an audience.
Jest saying. And think about the young people . Would you consider a fee based question and answer situation.
Take care! |
