I recently picked up a 4x5 Super D and I love it. It's has a sync connection and I have a sync cable that fits it. Does anyone know if this camera will sync with modern strobes? I tested it with a Profoto Pro 8 pack, the cable works but the strobes wouldn't fire from the camera.
Thanks! |

I believe all the Graflex reflex models will only sync with electronc flash at the T setting; i.e., shutter opens until the next press closes it. So you will need to keep the ambient light down in the studio and quickly close the shutter after the flash. I know it’s not what you want to hear. The reason is that the GHraflex focal plane shutter never fully exposes the whole frame at the same time at any faster speeds. The sync was intended for long burn FP flashbulbs. But the camera should be triggering your flash to at least go off. The contacts, which are foil on the edge of the shutter curtain, might be worn. Since you have to manually open and close the shutter anyway to use electronic flash, it isn’t much more trouble to manually trigger your strobes while the shutter is open. |

I spoke with someone who specializes in these cameras. To shoot with strobe you would set the tension to 0 and it should synch. Mine is still not synching and he suggests cleaning the contacts inside the camera. I am not going to risk that procedure unless I win the lottery.
