below is an image of two Annie Speeds. The one on the left is from 1944 and has a couple of speed bumps over the focus knobs. The camera on the right is from 1941 and is smooth.
I'm trying to find out when these bumps developed. For all of the people that have Anny Speeds between '41 and '44. Let's here from you!
Is your Speed Bumped or not?

I have a early '42 model and it has the speed bumps on it, I wonder if they changed after the '41 production runs.

Maybe when they changed the sportsfinder?
My '45 has 'em; my '41 doesn't.
My older '40 didn't had them either.

Both of mine have the bumps:
324917 black military
392343 chrome trim civilian
While I have not asked Galdalf to date them, I have always regarded the civilian camera to be a very late one. Time to ask him.

A lot of do-it yourselfers out there in Graphic land, this is most likely a buy 2 make one good one exercise...Or, the remote fact that F&S never waisted inventory, and found a hidden bunch of the old ones in a corner somewhere!

My 3¼x4¼ "Anniversary Speed", S/N 366098, does not have the "speed bump" over the focusing pinion. While looking, I observed (sorrowfully) that a hairline crack has developed over the pinion on the opposite side of the bed -- which may suggest the factory's motive in adding the bump. |

Les...I have performed exercises like this on Hasselblads (mainly in cooperation with Rick Nordin, who is the author of Hasselblad System Compendium). I have found that watching all the incoming subject items on Ebay and comparing photos with serial numbers, etc. has been the most conclusive way of determining changes. This would be my suggestion since so many appear on that site. JP Mose |

I believe the thicker ones may have been factory replacements. As Mr Sanford said, they crack right over the focus pinion shaft. have a couple with cracks. Doesn't seem to bother anything, though.

Gandalf has now dated my two cameras as '43 and '46.
Bert's comment about early examples with the bumps being the product of salvage efforts makes sense, especially if the flat plates were found to be weak. Also, as the early cameras came in for factory overhaul cracked plates would have been replaced with the updated part. |

And another thing... TR mentioned that his 3X4s did not have the bumps. So I checked the two that I have, and they also did not have the bumps. I have never seen a 3X4 with them; perhaps the "fix" was only done for the 4X5 cameras.
Has anyone ever seen a 3X4 with the bumps? |

None of my 3x4s have them either, but this part is so much smaller that I doubt it got the strain the 4x5 version did from the focus knob bumping on things.

I have a '43 (326717 w/date per Gandalf) 4x5 with the "speed bumps".
Hope that's of some help.
