One of the steps in rehabbing this camera is dealing with the small spots of corrosion on body parts in and around the camera. Do I scrape, sand, use a solvent of some type? and after the corrosion is dealt with, what is the best way to recover the metal? |

For the heavey corrosion, I use a brass wire brush. Looks like a slightly larger toothbrush with brass bristles. You can find them in hobby stores or hardware stores, usually near welding equipment.
Use a gentle touch and it will have very little affect on surrounding paint.
I wouldn't recommend anything like sandpaper because it will remove the metal and damage surrounding paint.
For paint on small areas, I generally use any black paint I have on hand Sometimes that the bottle of flat black I use for lens boards, or automotive touch-up paint...
For very large areas, if you want to say repaint the entire back, you can buy the wrinkle paint in spray cans. If you search the site for 'wrinkle paint' you'll find some very good info on that...

I just picked up some paint at our local Ace hardware, that is perfect for restorations or even fabrication, it is a normal spray paint and drys with a textured finish like you find on many brackets you see in the camera industry, it was about 1/2 the price of the wrinkle paint..

If it's on the aluminum or magnesium parts, I scrub it down with vinegar and the little brass wire brush mentioned. When rinsed and totally dry, I spray it with Krylon Semi Flat spray paint. I haven't seen the wrinkle finishes around here. If it's green goo under the covering (Zeiss bumps), I can't recommend anything that readily dissolves that stuff, as I've never found such a thing to date. I just scrape it of with a round toothpick and rub until it's gone. A spot of lacquer after cleanup won't hurt, either.
