Okay for those of you that hung around here more than 6 months, you'll know that a film holder for a Graflex back is slightly wider than a Graphic film holder and uses a groove for a light trap instead of a couple of ridges.

You'll also know that they don't inter change well. You can saw off the gooves of a Graflex film holder and make it fit a Graphic back, but the light trap won't work. And several newbies have discovered to their disappointment you can't make a Graphic holder fit a Graflex back. The holder is too narrow and the ridges get in the way.

So somebody explain to me this holder:

Does anybody know what it will fit?
Does anybody have a catalog that can decipher the cat. number (my catalogs from 1951 show a 3x4 graflex film holder as 1113 and a 3x4 plate holder as 1123.
The Graphic fim holder is 1213 but no plate holder, just a lantern slide holder as 1227.

Very strange cargo. Really looks like a variant on a Graphic holder, with no Graflex influence. I have never seen anything with comparable male ridges.

But...have you tried to see if it will fit a Graphic back? It might just do so, with the ridges seating above the edge of the back. Or they might keep the holder from going down far enough to seat. Try it in both an Annie and a Pacemaker.

I suppose its possible that it is an experimental holder that the toolroom put together, although the PN suggests a production item. I cannot imagine why they would not have used a standard holder for any special application they may have had.

Well it is a Graphic holder, the Graflex influences are the "chaps" on each side.

I've tried a Graphic back and, no surprise, it won't fit, the chaps are in the way.

I haven't tried it on a Graflex Back yet, but I checked it with a 3x4 Graflex film holder and they are the same width, so it should fit.

Interestingly, the chaps end right where the groove in the holder should be, so if there's a ridge on the camera at that point, there's no question this will leak light.

It seems the groove in these chaps are a bit wider than the goove in the Graflex holder, maybe that's why they put velvet in them.

Somebody suggested these fit a large telescope. Is there anybody out there with connections to a retired astrophysist?

It's kind of odd that it's a film holder if it was for astrophotography. I always thought they held onto glass plates long after everybody else went to film because glass was so much more dimensionally stable.
