Hi,

I have a 4x5 Crown Graphic in pretty good shape that I use for landscape photography. During my last outing, I noticed that the upper right corner of the GG back did not hold tight to the film holders when they were inserted in the camera. I held the glass firmly against the holder for the rest of the trip. Upon developing my negatives, I found that the ones taken before I noticed the problem were all fogged in that corner. Does anyone have a suggestion for a repair that would tighten the back up a bit? This is a recent development, and I cannot point to an event that would have caused this problem.

Thanks in advance.

It would depend on whether or not you have a Graflok or spring back.

If it's a spring back, you'd probably have to remove and either retension or replace the spring.

For the Graflok. The two arms that slide into the back are tensioned by coil springs on a shaft. The most common problem is that dirt and/or corrosion get into the area where the shaft goes through the back. Most often a simple touch of light oil and some flexing back & forth fixes this.

If there is very little tension on one of the arms, it is possible the spring has broken. There you're into a replacement.

Check it out a little closer and let us know what type of back you have...

Hi,

Thanks for the quick responses. I really appreciate them. I hate to sound uninformed, but what are PMs?

Thanks again.

Hi,

If you look at the links in the upper right hand corner, you will see a link for private messages, just click on there and you might have to login like you do to post a message, then you will be able to read and reply to the messages that are there.

Dave
