I know this type of camera was made for a very long time; can anyone tell me when they first appeared? Mine is nominally 5X7, mahogony, and appears nicely made although unmarked as to what company produced it.

One strange detail I noticed while cleaning it up was that the GG was a piece of hand poured glass, not plate. The ground side was true, but the clear side was irregular. I find it hard to believe that they would intentionally use such a piece of glass, unless plate was prohibitively expensive or not available at the time. The GG appears original.
